If You’re Unsure, That Makes Sense

Counselling Room for Psychotherapy

We understand how starting therapy can feel vulnerable. Especially if you’ve spent years being ‘the strong one,’ translating yourself, or bracing for misunderstanding. You don’t need certainty to begin. You don’t need the right words.

You just need a place that knows how to listen.

A Space Where You Don’t Have to Explain Yourself

Welcome to a space where you get to exhale.

At Thrive, we offer lived experience queer-affirming therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples in British Columbia who are tired of shrinking, masking, or explaining themselves. Our experienced counsellors understand the nuance of identity, relationships, and the quiet (or not-so-quiet) work of becoming more fully yourself. Whether you’re questioning, reconnecting, redefining, or just trying to make sense of this strange and beautiful life, we’re here with compassion, depth, and a sense of humour.

FAQs

Do you offer queer-affirming therapy?

Yes—queer-affirming therapy is not a specialization we added later. It’s the baseline.
Every therapist at Thrive is trained to work with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples in a way that doesn’t require you to explain, justify, or translate who you are. Your identity is treated as context, not a problem to solve.

What does “queer-affirming” actually mean in therapy?

It means your therapist understands how sexuality, gender, culture, power, and nervous systems intersect—and how these shape relationships, mental health, and self-worth.

It also means:

  • No assumptions

  • No pathologizing identity

  • No pressure to fit a narrative (coming out, staying out, labels, timelines)

You get to define what authenticity looks like for you.

Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples and non-traditional relationships?

Yes. We work with LGBTQ+ couples, polyamorous and consensually non-monogamous relationships, chosen family systems, and relationships that don’t fit traditional models.

Our approach focuses on communication, attachment, boundaries, desire, and repair—without imposing heteronormative or monogamy-centric assumptions.

I’m not in crisis—can therapy still help?

Absolutely. Many clients come to us not because something is “wrong,” but because something feels unfinished, constrained, or out of alignment.

Therapy can be a space to:

  • Untangle identity questions

  • Work through relational patterns

  • Heal old trauma that still shows up in the present

  • Learn how to feel safer in your body and relationships

You don’t need to be at a breaking point to begin.

Are your therapists experienced with gender identity exploration?

Yes. We support clients exploring gender identity, expression, transition, detransition, and questioning—without pressure toward any outcome.

Therapy here is about listening inward, not rushing clarity or certainty.
