Counselling Metro Vancouver: Care for Every Community, Not Just the Core
Good counselling Metro Vancouver families can actually reach should not depend on living near a SkyTrain station. Whether you are in Walnut Grove, Ladner, Hammond, Ambleside or on Bowen Island, this guide explains the three ways to work with Thrive Downtown Counselling Centre, how people in different parts of the region tend to use them, what to expect when you start, and which local supports can sit alongside your sessions.
On this page
Since 2013, our team has worked from 470 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver and, increasingly, over secure video. We practise together as a group, support one another, and bring a wide range of identities, values and backgrounds to the work. Underneath everything is one steady message: you make sense, you are not broken, and connection heals.
Three Ways to Get Support
People across Metro Vancouver use our counselling services in different ways depending on distance, schedule and personal preference. None is better than another. The right choice is the one you can sustain.
1. Online by secure video
Sessions happen over Zoom from home, a parked car or a private office. This is often the most practical choice for communities far from downtown, for parents and shift workers, and for anyone who finds it easier to talk from a familiar place.
2. In person downtown
Our spacious, one-of-a-kind therapy rooms at 470 Granville Street offer a dedicated space away from home. Some people value the physical separation: the trip in becomes time to prepare, and the trip home becomes time to reflect.
3. A mix of both
Many clients combine formats, for example video most weeks and an in-person session when they are downtown for work, appointments or errands. Where your counsellor offers both, switching is simple.
Community Snapshots Across the Region
Metro Vancouver stretches from the Fraser Valley edge to Howe Sound. Here is how counselling tends to fit into life in some of the communities we serve.
Langley, White Rock and South Surrey
South of the Fraser, many households juggle long commutes, growing families and busy school schedules. Video sessions save the drive over the river, while in-person visits downtown can be combined with a work day in the city. Families in these communities are served by Fraser Health for public health care.
Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen
These close-knit communities can feel a world away from downtown, especially when tunnel traffic backs up. Online sessions offer both convenience and a degree of privacy for people who prefer not to see a counsellor in their own small town.
Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows
Set between the mountains and the Fraser and Pitt rivers, these communities offer space and nature, but downtown can be a long trip. Video sessions suit busy weeks, and the West Coast Express makes weekday commuter trips to Waterfront Station possible when you want to come in person.
West Vancouver and Bowen Island
On the North Shore and across the water, people often weigh ferry schedules, bridge traffic and weather. Bowen Island residents can skip the sailing to Horseshoe Bay entirely with online sessions. West Vancouver is part of Vancouver Coastal Health, as is Bowen Island.
Lions Bay, Anmore and Belcarra
Some of the smallest municipalities in Metro Vancouver sit at the edges of the region, tucked between forest, mountains and water. Residents often love the quiet and dislike the drive. For them, counselling Metro Vancouver style usually means video sessions most weeks, with the option to come downtown when it suits.
The SkyTrain core
If you live closer in, our local pages go deeper into travel, community context and supports for Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Surrey, North Vancouver, Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Why One Downtown Team Can Serve the Whole Region
You might wonder why someone in Maple Ridge or White Rock would choose a counselling centre on Granville Street. The answer is mostly about choice and fit.
- A wider bench. Instead of one or two local options, you can choose from a whole team with different styles, specialties and life experiences.
- Group practice. Our counsellors practise together and consult one another, so your counsellor has colleagues to think alongside.
- Diversity of perspective. The team is diverse in identities, views, values, world-origins and backgrounds, and down to earth, with no political loyalty to a single correct answer.
- Specialized approaches. EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Gottman Method, CBT and more are available from wherever you live.

Choosing Between Online, In-Person or Both
If you are unsure which format suits you, a few honest questions can help:
- How much time can you realistically give each week? If travel would double the time commitment, video may keep you consistent.
- Do you have a private space at home? If not, in-person sessions or a parked car may work better.
- How do you feel on screens? Some people feel more present in a room. Others relax more at home.
- Are you downtown regularly anyway? If so, in-person sessions can piggyback on trips you already make.
- What kind of work are you doing? Your counsellor may suggest a particular format for some phases, such as intensive trauma processing.
You can also start one way and change your mind later. Many people do.
Try a simple experiment
If you cannot decide, book your first two sessions in different formats and compare. Notice how you feel before, during and after each one: how rushed you were, how easy it was to open up, and how you felt on the way back to your day. Your own experience is the best guide.
Counselling Metro Vancouver Residents Seek at Every Life Stage
People reach out at all ages and stages. Here is how counselling often shows up across a lifetime in Metro Vancouver.
Young adults
Leaving home, starting post-secondary or a first career, and figuring out relationships and identity can feel thrilling and destabilizing at once. Counselling offers a steady place to sort through big choices without judgment.
New parents and growing families
Sleep loss, shifting roles and the pressure of raising children in an expensive region can strain even strong partnerships. Support can help you stay connected to yourself and each other.
Midlife
Career plateaus, caring for aging parents, separation, health changes and questions about meaning often cluster in midlife. It can be a time of real reckoning and real growth.
Later life
Retirement, grief, loneliness and changing health bring their own challenges. Video sessions can be especially helpful when mobility or transportation is limited.
Whatever your stage, our team meets you where you are, with curiosity rather than a script.
Getting Downtown When You Want to Meet in Person
Our building sits steps from Granville SkyTrain Station on the Expo Line and a short walk from Waterfront Station, where the Canada Line, Expo Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express meet. From the outer communities, typical options include:
- Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows: West Coast Express to Waterfront on weekday commuter runs, or driving or transit connections to the Millennium Line.
- Langley: Bus connections to the Expo Line in Surrey, then a direct ride to Granville Station.
- White Rock, South Surrey, Delta and Tsawwassen: Bus connections to the Canada Line, which runs into downtown.
- West Vancouver: Buses cross the Lions Gate Bridge into downtown.
- Bowen Island: Ferry to Horseshoe Bay, then transit or a drive into the city.
Routes and schedules change, so check TransLink before you travel. After hours, use buzzer #0518 or #0901 depending on your counsellor’s suite.
Making the Most of a Trip Downtown
If you travel in from the edges of Metro Vancouver for an in-person session, a little planning makes the day feel less rushed.
- Build in buffer time. Bridges, tunnels and rush hour are unpredictable, so aim to arrive early and settle.
- Pair it with something restorative. A walk along the Coal Harbour seawall or a quiet coffee afterward can help a session land.
- Bring layers and an umbrella. Downtown weather can change quickly, especially from fall to spring.
- Plan the ride home. Some people like music or a podcast; others prefer silence to let things settle.
- Have a video backup. If weather or traffic makes the trip impossible, ask whether your session can switch to video.

Health Authorities and Local Supports
Public health care in Metro Vancouver is shared by two regional health authorities, and knowing which one serves your community makes it easier to find local programs. Fraser Health serves communities such as Langley, Delta, White Rock, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Surrey, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. Vancouver Coastal Health serves Vancouver, Richmond, the North Shore and nearby coastal communities. Both offer mental health and substance use services, often accessed through your family doctor or a walk-in clinic.
- HealthLink BC: Call 8-1-1 for health information and help navigating services.
- BC mental health support line: Call 310-6789, no area code needed.
- Suicide crisis support: Call or text 988 any time.
- Community programs: Local branches of the Canadian Mental Health Association run groups and programs in several Metro Vancouver communities.
- Self-help and information: HeretoHelp offers BC-focused mental health resources.
If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
Costs, Coverage and Affordable Options
- Fees vary by service and counsellor. Current rates are shown when you book or on our contact page.
- Many extended health plans reimburse counselling by registered counsellors. Check which designations your plan accepts, such as RCC or CCC.
- Our low-cost counselling option connects you with supervised intern counsellors.
- Video sessions can reduce what you spend on fuel, parking, ferries and time off work, which matters more the farther you live from the centre of Metro Vancouver.
